Softball Recap: Escalon Takes a Loss

Escalon lost against Hilmar back in April of 2024, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Tuesday. The Cougars fell just short of the Yellowjackets by a score of 12-11. Even though they lost, the Cougars' still made a splash at the plate and bumped their average scoring up to 6.2 runs per game (they're now ranked -1th in scoring overall).

Madison Babasa was huge no matter where she played even without the win. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. She has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring three runs and stealing a base while getting on base in all five of her plate appearances.

In other batting news, Jayci Trimble stepped up to lead a balanced group of hitters: she went 3-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and one triple. Another player making a difference was Ariana Velasco, who scored three runs and stole two bases while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances.

Escalon has been struggling recently as they've lost seven of their last eight matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 4-10 record this season. That patch can't be blamed on the team's hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 6.5 runs over those games. As for Hilmar, they moved to 7-7 with that victory, which also ended their four-game losing streak.

Escalon has already played their next game, an 11-0 loss against Linden on the 2nd. As for Hilmar, they also didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next contest, a 13-0 defeat against Orestimba on the 3rd.
