The Chavez Titans waltzed into their game on Thursday with four straight wins but they left with five. They walked away with a 56-47 victory over Kennedy. That's another feather in the cap for Chavez, who also won these teams' last head-to-head.
Chavez got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Chloe Lopez out in front who scored 16 points along with six rebounds and two steals. Lopez hasn't dropped below two steals for four straight games. Another player making a difference was Hannah Diaz, who scored 12 points along with six assists and six steals.
Valeria Payan-Medina and Kayleen Maes certainly did their best on Thursday to try and avoid the loss. Payan-Medina dropped a double-double on 15 points and 14 rebounds, while Maes scored 18 points along with seven rebounds. That's the first time this season that Payan-Medina scored 15 or more points. The team also got some help courtesy of Imaree Curry, who scored nine points along with eight rebounds.
Chavez is on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last nine contests, which provided a nice bump to their 8-8 record this season. As for Kennedy, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 8-11.
Chavez will be playing in front of their home fans against Shafter at 6:15 p.m. on Monday. Shafter is looking to tack on another W to their five-game streak on the road. As for Kennedy, they will take on Taft at 6:30 p.m. on Monday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in California (Taft is ranked 959th, while Kennedy is ranked 966th).
