California High School Basketball - Calexico holds off Palo Verde Valley
February 4, 2025: Blythe, CA 92225 The Calexico Bulldogs basketball team scored 47 points and limited the host Palo Verde Valley Yellow Jackets to 40 in the Bulldogs league triumph on Tuesday.
The Bulldogs now possess a 7-15 record. They play next when they travel to Central for a Southeastern - Imperial Valley game on Thursday, February 6. Calexico will confront a Spartans team coming off a 56-16 non-league win over Southwest EC (El Centro, CA). The Spartans record now stands at 13-11.
With the loss, Palo Verde Valley falls to 8-10 on the campaign. The Yellow jackets host Vincent Memorial (Calexico, CA) to confront the Scots in a Southeastern - Imperial Valley game on Friday, February 7. The Scots go into the game with a record of 16-6. Vincent Memorial lost 59-40 in their recent league game against Imperial (Imperial, CA)
First Quarter
The Bulldogs jumped out to an early 8-0 lead on two 3 point baskets by Ivanna Camanilla. The Lady Jackets struggled to get going offensively in the first quarter.
Second Quarter
The Lady Jackets played tough defensively in the second quarter as both teams struggled to find the basket in the second quarter.
Third Quarter
Two late 3 pointers by Camanilla including one at the buzzer helped the Bulldogs stretch the lead to 10 at the end of the quarter. The Lady Jackets hit two 3 pointers of their own and were fouled heavily during the third quarter going to the line 3 times hitting 4 of 6 free throws.
Fourth Quarter
Yellow jackets went on a run to take the lead 40-39 with under 3 minutes to play in the game but 2 late 3 pointers one by Evelyn Rubia helped secure the win for the Bulldogs despite what would have been a great come from behind victory for the Lady Jackets.
