Fans at Thursday's non-league challenge between the Mathews Blue Devils (Mathews, VA) and the host Essex Trojans (Tappahannock, VA), saw Mathews's basketball squad hold off Essex by a count of 48-43.

With the victory, Mathews upgrades its record to 2-8 on the campaign. The Blue Devils host Carver College and Career Academy (Chester, VA) to play the Wolverines in a Tidewater challenge on Friday, January 5. The Wolverines come into the challenge with a record of 7-1. Carver College and Career Academy lost 75-68 in their recent non-league challenge against Petersburg (Petersburg, VA)
