January 22, 2024: North Las Vegas, NV 89032
In Monday's league match, the host Canyon Springs Pioneers basketball team scored a decisive 54-30 triumph over the Cimarron-Memorial Spartans.
In their next game, the Pioneers meet the Durango Trailblazers (Las Vegas, NV) in a non-league match, on Friday, January 26. Canyon Springs will attempt to move on its 2-1 season record. The Trailblazers enter the match with a 3-6 record after their 49-47 league loss to Spring Valley (Las Vegas, NV).
With the defeat, Cimarron-Memorial moves to 4-11 on the year. The Spartans host Boulder City (Boulder City, NV) to meet the Eagles in a non-league match on Wednesday, January 24. The Eagles enter the match with a record of 1-1.
First Quarter
The Spartans Lead early 7 to 6 before Canyon went on a 13 to 0 run. The Spartans defense was definitely creating turnovers, but unfortunately each time they had steal, it was as if they threw the ball away immediately after earning an extra possession.
Second Quarter
The Spartans trailed 21 to 7 when Guard Cedric Williams entered the game & his hustle lead to 8 consecutive points by the Cimarron to close out the half.
Third Quarter
In the 3rd Quarter Canyon dominated the the Spartans by outscoring them 23 to 6. Possession after possession the Spartans came up empty handed & missed many shots. Unfortunately with Canyon's 1-3-1 Zone, the Spartans did not have an answer as the turnover continued to pile up.
Fourth Quarter
In the 4th Quarter the Spartans continued to miss layups, turn the ball over, & not rebound. Unfortunately, when they started to make a run late & create turnovers it was too late. Coach Shkorupa after the game said, "When your opponent is extremely unselfish, & every player(11) scores baskets, that is something very difficult to defend. Canyon Springs has an excellent Coach & he is 11 players deep, & when they come in & out of the game they are ready, & make very few mistakes. Defensively, their 1-3-1 Zone dominated us, & I did a poor job preparing my team to attack this zone. We also had 6 guys tonight that scored zero points & as the game progressed we took many more shots, but unfortunately the shots were off & once again thats because of my poor coaching & not stressing enough during practice how important communication, boxing out, & protecting the basketball is to being successful".
