High school basketball rankings: Paul VI takes over No. 1 spot in MaxPreps Top 25

By Jordan Divens Dec 12, 2023, 10:30am

Bullis, Huntsville, DeMatha and Lake Travis break into the latest rankings.

There is a new No. 1 in the MaxPreps Top 25 high school basketball rankings for the third time this season. Paul VI (Chantilly, Va.) claims that spot with Long Island Lutheran (Brookville, N.Y.) moving over to the National Top 10.

As a member of the EYBL Scholastic conference and a program competing for the Federation state title in New York, Long Island Lutheran was in a unique spot – a gray area, if you will – in the high school basketball landscape.

With the Federation state tournament in the Empire State being canceled, that gray area became more black and white.

Based on our criteria established to separate independent/academy programs and traditional high schools in the national rankings, Long Island Lutheran aligns more closely with National Top 10 programs given its place in EYBL Scholastic and lack of in-state postseason play.

Other significant movement in the rankings included St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) and John Marshall (Richmond, Va.) moving into the top 10. Bullis (Potomac, Md.), Huntsville (Ala.), DeMatha (Hyattsville, Md.) and Lake Travis (Austin, Texas) join the national rankings.

No. 4 Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey) is the last team in the MaxPreps Top 25 to get underway this season as action in New Jersey finally tips off this week.
