Volleyball Recap: Highland Takes Loss Despite Strong Performances from Sam Zurlis and Aubree Ahrens

Highland was not able to break out of their rough patch on Wednesday as the team picked up their sixth straight loss. They lost 3-0 to the Merrillville Pirates. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Pirates this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 2-0 two weeks ago.

Highland was not able to win a set, but it sure wasn't from a lack of trying: every set was decided by three points or less. The match finished with set scores of 25-22, 25-23, 25-23.

Highland's defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Aubree Ahrens, who had five digs and three aces, and Sam Zurlis, who had nine digs.

Rheana Early was the offensive standout of the match as she had 14 digs and three aces. That's the most digs she has posted over her last seven games. Laianna Boyd also deserves some recognition as she served her first ace of the season.

Highland's loss dropped their record down to 1-7. As for Merrillville, with the victory, they broke their five-game losing streak and moved their record to 5-7.

Highland has already played their next contest, a 3-1 defeat against Griffith on the 28th. As for Merrillville, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 3-2 loss against Portage on the 28th.
