No. 1 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) slipped by Kahuku (Hawaii) 21-18 on Friday night. After an early Mater Dei touchdown from Ryan Hopkins to Gavin Honore, the Red Raiders defense kept the Monarchs out of the end zone until Malachi Roby scored with 2:27 left to put the game away.

Kahuku UCLA commit Madden Soliai intercepted a Mater Dei pass and the Red Raiders took advantage. With under a minute left in the first half Troy Mariteragi hit Rhino Aumua to cut the lead to 8-7.

Mater Dei drove down the field multiple times in the second half but were held to field goals as the Kahuku defense led by Talanoa Ili held firm.

Kahuku had its best chance to tie midway through the fourth quarter by driving to the Mater Dei 12-yard line, but ended up settling for a field goal to cut the lead to 14-10 with 5:58 left.

The Monarchs ran the ball every play on its next possession and it ended as Roby scored the touchdown with 2:27 left.

Kahuku wasn't done and rolled down the field to score a touchdown with 40 seconds left. The ensuing onside kick was unsuccessful and Mater Dei ran out the clock.

No. 2 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) used two second half touchdowns to defeat No. 4 St. Frances Academy (Baltimore, Md.) 21-14.
