The Indiana school finished second in 2018-19 and continued its dominance, coming in third after one season of sport.

Champlain Valley Union (Hinesburg, Vt.) has long been the largest school in Vermont and as a result has been the top athletic program in the state. Now, the Redhawks have the best athletic program in the nation.

Based on the MaxPreps Cup scoring system, Champlain Valley Union accumulated 1,033 points to edge Benet Academy (Lisle, Ill.) with 1,003 points as the nation's top all-around high school sports program after the fall sports season.

The MaxPreps Cup endeavors to determine the top high school athletic programs in the country based on several factors, including state championships, state runner-up finishes and placement in national rankings. Points are also awarded based on the size of the state, the popularity of the sport, the enrollment playoff level and the number of teams competing in the enrollment playoff level. National rankings used include the MaxPreps Top 25 rankings, the MaxPreps computer rankings, cross country rankings by Dyestat and field hockey rankings by MaxHockey.

Champlain Valley Union excelled this fall by winning six state championships and finishing second in a seventh.

"It was an amazing fall season," said CVU activities director Dan Shepardson. "We are the largest school in Vermont. We draw from four fairly affluent towns and the athletes are able to specialize on one or two sports. Their parents can afford to send them to camps during the summer and we usually win about six or eight state championships during a school year. But we won six championships in the fall alone. It was because we have some amazing coaches and some amazing kids."

Champlain Valley Union won seven state titles in 2019-20 and finished No. 24 in the final MaxPreps Cup rankings.

Benet Academy, which did not even finish in the Top 100 in last year's MaxPreps Cup rankings, zoomed to No. 2 this fall with nationally ranked teams in boys soccer and girls volleyball, both of which won state titles, and a state championship girls cross country team.

Carmel (Ind.), last year's No. 2 program, comes in at No. 3 this fall with 962 points while Edina (Minn.), is fourth at 946. Edina finished No. 13 last year. Bolles (Jacksonville, Fla.), last year's No. 16 team, comes in at No. 5.

Jesuit (Portland, Ore.), last year's No. 1 program, comes in at No. 21 after the fall season.
