Baseball Recap: Keystone Comes Up Short

Keystone had lost three straight on the road, but on Friday they dropped down to 15-10 to make it four. They fell just short of the Avon Eagles by a score of 6-5. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Wildcats of the 1-0 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in May of 2025.

As for Avon, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six games. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-13 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.5 runs on average over those games.

For Avon's part, Evan Masuga looked comfortable as he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. Masuga is becoming a predictor of the Eagles' success: when he allows at most three earned runs the team is 6-3 (and 6-10 when he doesn't).

At the plate, Avon got a massive performance out of Trevor Sykora, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, two doubles, and two RBI. Sykora has become a key player for the Eagles: the team is 2-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 10-12 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Kyle Delury, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with three stolen bases and one run.

Coming up, Keystone will be playing at home against Girard at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Avon, they will challenge Brecksville-Broadview Heights at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Bees' pitching crew has only allowed 3.6 runs per game this season, so the Eagles' hitters will have their work cut out for them.
