Baseball Recap: Covington Trojans vs. South Vermillion Wildcats
Covington fought the good fight in their extra-innings contest against South Vermillion on Saturday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Wildcats by a score of 6-5. The Trojans were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Wildcats earlier this season, when they won 9-6.
Kaden Smith was huge no matter where he played even without the win. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over seven innings while giving up four earned (and one unearned) runs off eight hits. Smith was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one home run.
In other batting news, Colton Pettit and Kyven Hill did some serious damage despite the final result: Pettit went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases, one run, and one double, while Hill went 1-for-4 with one home run. That home run was Hill's first of the season. Another player making a difference was Easton Alexander, who went 1-for-2 with two RBI.
Covington's defeat ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 11-10. As for South Vermillion, their victory ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 6-15.
Coming up, Covington will face off against North Vermillion at 5:00 p.m. on Monday.
