By Zack Poff Nov 19, 2022, 3:30pm

No. 10 IMG Academy takes down No. 2 St. Frances Academy 27-16.

The biggest upset of the week came in Georgia's AAAAAAA playoff bracket as Walton (Marietta) took down No. 6 Buford 42-35 to advance to the quarterfinals. It was the first playoff loss for the Wolves since 2018 when they lost 23-20 against Bainbridge in the AAAAA quarterfinals. The Raiders face standout freshman quarterback Julian Lewis and Carrollton with a spot in the semifinals on the line.

In one of the biggest high school football games of the 2022 season No. 10 IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) beat No. 2 St. Frances Academy (Baltimore) 27-16 at the University of Maryland. Five-star Ohio State commit Carnell Tate caught two touchdowns and was the best player on the field. The Ascenders snapped the Panthers 17-game win streak and ended their hopes of finishing the year at No. 1.

IMG Academy has won eight in a row since a season-opening 20-14 loss against Central (Miami) and it was the first time they beat St. Frances Academy since 2016.

No. 1  Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) rolled to its 29th consecutive victory with an impressive 52-0 win over No. 24 Los Alamitos (Calif.). The Monarchs dominated in all three phases. The Griffins had scored at least 47 points in every game during their eight-game winning steak but ran into a buzz saw on Friday at the Santa Ana Bowl. Mater Dei's junior quarterback Elijah Brown improved his career record to 29-0 and has now beat nine MaxPreps Top 25 opponents.

Up next is No. 4 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) who rolled past No. 25  Mission Viejo (Calif.) 41-6.

The game is on Nov. 25 at the Rose Bowl for the CIF Southern Section Division 1 championship. Expect the Braves to move up to No. 2 in next week's MaxPreps Top 25 after No. 2 St. Frances Academy (Baltimore) lost and No. 3 Central (Miami) struggled to a 34-30 win over Northwestern (Miami). The Rockets will take on Norland (Miami) with a spot in the semifinals on the line next week.

No. 14 Guyer (Denton, Texas) had one of its biggest tests and handed Highland Park (Dallas) its first loss of the season with a 63-42 win. Five-star Oklahoma commit Jackson Arnold completed 19 of 21 passes for 223 yards and two touchdowns while adding 16 carries for 110 yards and four more scores.

No. 5 Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) won its 19th state title and 13th since 2007. The Gaels cruised to a 70-6 win in the 5A state championship against Bishop Manogue (Reno).
