MaxPreps Cup: State leaders after winter season

MaxPreps presents the MaxPreps Cup state by state winter standings and there's no closer race for the best high school sports program in the state than in Montana where three schools are within four points.

Hellgate and Billings Central Catholic are both tied with 634 points while Billings West has 630. A fourth school, Manhattan Christian, is 20 points back with 614.

Louisiana is also a close one with three schools within 21 points of each other. St. Thomas More (Lafayette) leads the state with 930 points, but Catholic (Baton Rouge) is right behind with 929. Twenty points back is E.D. White (Thibodaux) with 909 points. Georgia also has a close competition with Marist (Atlanta) leading Buford by just two points, 947-945.

The most lopsided lead is in Indiana, where national leader Carmel leads Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory (Indianapolis) by 609 points.



The MaxPreps Cup is comprised of a formula that attempts to determine the best overall high school sports programs in the nation. Points are awarded on a weighted basis with larger states receiving more points than smaller states (due to more competition), more popular sports (based on NFHS participation survey) receiving more points than less popular sports and larger schools gaining more points than smaller schools (again based on more competition).
