Three teams averaged over 60 points per game, including state champions from Oklahoma and Virginia.

To get an idea of the level of scoring in high school football games across the country in 2022, consider the case of Bixby (Okla.). The Spartans averaged 61.8 points per game this season and would have been the highest scoring team in the nation 85 of the past 91 years dating back to 1931.

However in 2022, the Oklahoma Class 6A-1 state champions rank only third best in the country behind Bowling Green (Mo.) and Freedom (Woodbridge, Va.). Bowling Green averaged 64.6 points per game and scored over 60 points in each of its first 10 games of the season. Freedom, meanwhile, led the nation with 952 points scored in 15 games for an average of 63.4 points.

A total of 47 teams averaged 50 or more points in a game this year. The all-time record for scoring average in a season is Fostoria (Ohio) at 74.5 points per game in 1912.
