Post-winter MaxPreps Cup standings for every state

By Kevin Askeland May 6, 2025, 2:00pm

Hoover in Alabama, Punahou in Hawaii, Johnston in Iowa, Whitman in Maryland and Perry in Ohio among biggest movers.

A total of 23 states have new leaders in the MaxPreps Cup state-by-state standings, including five states whose new leader was not in the top five coming out of the fall season.

Hoover (Ala.), Punahou (Honolulu, Hawaii), Johnston (Iowa), Whitman (Bethesda, Md.) and Perry (Massillon, Ohio) were not among the top five teams in their state, but they had huge winter seasons to move up to No. 1.

Making the biggest leap was Hoover, moving all the way to No. 13 in the overall rankings and No. 1 in Alabama. The Buccaneers won four state titles over the winter, were the runner-up in a fifth and were ranked nationally in boys basketball.

The MaxPreps Cup is a competition to determine the best overall high school sports program in the country using a formula that awards points based on state championships, runner-up finishes and national rankings. The top five schools in each state are listed below along with their MaxPreps Cup rating.
After going 9-13 during the regular season, Perry made an improbable run to the Division II state championship game in Ohio. That helped the Panthers rise to the top of the MaxPreps Cup standings in the Buckeye State. (PHOTO: Jeff Harwell)
