Muskegon, Everett, Plymouth among dynasties that have stood the test of time.
Whether its forms of government, 1980s TV shows or high school football programs, dynasties rarely last for long periods of time. Due to shifting demographics, new coaches or new schools, there's always something that brings a dynasty to an end.
Today's dynasty could be tomorrow's also-ran, so MaxPreps is taking a look at the football dynasties that ruled in each state during the 20th century and those that have made their mark in the 21st century.

Greatest football dynasties – then and now
Alabama
Then: Tuscaloosa
Won a pair of national championships in the 1920s (1926, 1929) under coach Paul Burnum and had seven consecutive undefeated seasons. School closed in 1978 with 11 state championships (all mythical) with the last coming in 1964.
Now: HooverOpen since 1963, Hoover has won 13 state championships with a .750 winning percentage (526-179-7 according to Alabama High School Football History).
Alaska
Football in Alaska has a short history with the first sort of playoffs taking place in 1983. Previously known simply as East Anchorage, the Thunderbirds won four state championships in the first seven years with three in a row (1985-87).
Now: SoldotnaThe Stars have had the top program in Alaska, regardless of division, over the past 20 years with a record of 159-21 and 13 state championships.
Arizona
Then: Phoenix
The Coyotes have not fielded a team in 40 years (the school closed in 1982) and has not won a state title since 1955, yet no team in Arizona is close to Phoenix Union's 25 all-time state championships.
Now: Hamilton (Chandler)Hamilton opened in 1998 and the Huskies have posted a 210-38 record over the past two decades. During that span they've won eight state championships.
Arkansas
The Tigers have won 32 state championships, the second-highest total in high school football history, with 24 of them coming prior to the 1957 season when Central was arguably the best team in the nation.
Now: Pulaski Academy (Little Rock)Hard to argue with the success of the Bruins, who have won 10 state championships and have a record of 229-30-1 over the past two decades.
California
The Drillers won six state championships in the 1920s and have won 37 section championships (California did not have state championships between 1929 and 2006).
Now: De La Salle (Concord)The Spartans have been the most dynastic team in the nation over the past 40 seasons, winning seven national championships, 19 state championships and winning close to 90 percent of its games.
Colorado
Although a small school, Limon was nearly unbeatable in the 1960s when it had more wins than any school in the country and posted a record of 103-8-4 with eight state championships.
Now: Valor Christian (Highlands Ranch)Opened in 2008, the Eagles have an all-time record of 156-26 with eight state championships.
Connecticut
The Golden Hurricanes have won 31 state championships, however 23 of them occurred before the end of World War II. For that matter, 13 of them occurred prior to World War I.
Now: New CanaanNo team has won more games in the state over the past 20 years than the Rams (180), who have also won 22 state championships all-time, all of them since 1950.
Delaware
The Sallies had a 29-game win streak in the 1950s and coach Dim Montero was national Catholic coach of the year in 1964. During Montero's run as coach, Salesianum put out some of the greatest teams in Delaware history.
Now: MiddletownSalesianum is still a worthy contender for best dynasty in the state, but Middletown has been the top team over the past 20 seasons with a 175-43 record and 12 championship game appearances with four state titles.
Florida
The Stingarees are recognized as national champions in 1942, 1943, 1960, 1962 and 1965 with 24 state titles between 1931 and 1965.
Now: St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale)The Raiders are 236-29 since 2003 and have posted 12 state championships since 1992.
Georgia
The school with the highest all-time win total (936) in high school history also has 24 state championships and six national championships between 1962 and 1992.
Now: BufordThe Wolves have won a whopping 254 games since 2003 with 14 state championships.
Hawaii
State championships began in the 1970s in Hawaii and St. Louis won 14 straight titles during the early days of the Oahu Prep Bowl.
Now: St. Louis
The Crusaders have continued to be a powerhouse, going 153-43 over the past 20 years with an additional seven state titles.
Idaho
The Lions barely let any other teams get a sniff of a state championship between 1958 and 1971 when they won 13 mythical state titles in 14 years.
Now: Highland (Pocatello)Since the playoffs began in 1979, Highland has been the powerhouse, winning 10 state championships in 40 years with a record of 164-50 over the past 20 years.
Illinois
The Flyers have won more games than any Illinois team (809) with nine state championships and a national championship.
Now: Loyola Academy (Wilmette)The Ramblers are 171-36 since 2006 under coach John Holecek with two state championships and four runner-up finishes in the 8A classification.
Indiana
Then: East Chicago Roosevelt
Although it closed in 1985, East Chicago Roosevelt was dominant in the 1940s and 1950s, winning seven state championships and posting six undefeated seasons.
Now: Warren Central (Indianapolis)The Warriors have won nine state championships since 1984 and have posted six seasons with at least 14 wins.
Iowa
In the 1920s, Washington often traveled all across the Midwest in search of worthy opponents. It posted eight undefeated seasons in the 1920s and was considered for a national championship in 1924.
Now: Dowling Catholic (West Des Moines)The Maroons have made the playoffs 43 times since the postseason began and posted 10 state championships.
Kansas
The Lions have posted 31 undefeated seasons with 29 state championships. Between 1945 and 1968 they won 15 state championships.
Now: Blue Valley (Stilwell)The top 6A team in the state over the past two decades with a record of 164-55, Blue Valley has posted five state championships since 1998.
Kentucky
With 927 all-time wins, Male ranks second in the nation behind Valdosta. The Louisville powerhouse won nine mythical state championships prior to 1960 when the state playoffs began.
Now: Trinity (Louisville)Since winning its first state championship in 1968, Trinity has won a state record 27 titles.
Louisiana
Home of Heisman Trophy winner Billy Cannon, Istrouma dominated the 1950s with eight titles between 1950 and 1962.
Now: John Curtis Christian (River Ridge)Few teams in the nation have won more state championships than the Patriots, who have claimed 26 titles since winning their first in 1975.
Maine
The Blue Devils won their first state title back in 1902 and won 18 titles overall with the final one coming in 1987.
Now: Bonny Eagle (Standish)Winners of seven state championships since 2004, Bonny Eagle has a record of 145-44 since 2003.
Maryland
Prior to winning its first official state championship in 1975, Fort Hill had just three losing seasons since its first season in 1936. The Sentinels also posted seven undefeated seasons.
Now: DeMatha (Hyattsville)The Stags don't play for a state championship, but they do compete for a Washington Catholic Athletic Conference championship, of which they have won 24. DeMatha has also posted a record of 173-38 since 2003.
Massachusetts
Winners of a pair of national championships back in 1914 and 1915, the former team is considered one of the greatest squads in high school football history. Everett won 16 state championships prior to the start of the Massachusetts state playoff format.
Now: Everett
Winners of state championships in nine different decades, Everett has won 12 state titles since 1997.
Michigan
A powerhouse in the 1920s with six state championships, Muskegon is also one of the winningest programs in high school football history with 877 all-time wins.
Now: Muskegon
Big Red continues to roll along with 205 wins and just 35 loss over the past 20 seasons.
Minnesota
Minnesota did not start holding state playoffs until the 1970s, but Austin won four mythical state championships during the 1950s and 1960s.
Now: Eden PrairieUnder coach Mike Grant, Eden Prairie is 204-22 over the past two decades at the state's highest enrollment classification with 11 state championships.
Mississippi
Mississippi didn't have state playoffs until the 1980s, but Meridian was a Big 8 Conference powerhouse since the conference began in 1927. Meridian won 12 conference titles by 1967.
Now: South Panola (Batesville)The Tigers won 89 games at one point along with a national championship. South Panola has also won a state record 11 state titles since 1993.
Missouri
The Jays won 10 state championships between 1976 and 1997. They also won six straight mythical championships between 1960 and 1965.
Now: Webb CityWith a record of 244-21 over the past two decades, Webb City has also won 16 state championships since 1989.
Montana
The Bulldogs won 20 state championships prior to 1960 and challenged for a national championship at various times in the early part of the 20th century.
Now: Billings Central Catholic (Billings)Winners of 168 games over the past 20 years, Central Catholic has also won three state titles since 2007.
Nebraska
The Junior Jays were the team to beat in Nebraska between 1930 and 1970 when they won 18 state championships.
Now: Norfolk Catholic (Norfolk)Winners of 192 games with just 34 losses, Norfolk Catholic has won 10 state titles since 1983.
Nevada
Prior to the population explosion in Las Vegas, the Huskies were the state powerhouse with 16 of its 19 state championships prior to 1965.
Now: Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas)The Gaels posted 10 straight state championships between 2009 and 2018 and has won 18 state championships since 1970.
New Hampshire
Under coach Chuck Lenehan, Plymouth won 11 state championships prior to year 2000.
Now: Plymouth
Lenehan didn't stop in 2000 as the program continued to win with 14 more championships during the 21st century.
New Jersey
Under Clary Anderson, Montclair rarely lost in knabbing 18 state championships between 1941 and 1966.
Now: Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey)The Ironmen posted three national championship teams from 2009 to 2011 and have gone 164-49 over the past two decades.
New Mexico
No school in the country has won more "on-the-field" championships than Artesia, which has won 30 starting in 1957. The Bulldogs won 21 of those crowns prior to 2000.
Now: Cleveland (Rio Rancho)Cleveland opened in 2009 but already it has established itself as a power in the state with a 123-25 record in just under 15 seasons.
New York
No team from the state association has won more state titles than Dobbs Ferry, which has racked up 10.
Now: St. Anthony's (Melville)The Friars have been a steady winner in the Catholic High School Football League, posting a 159-38 record since 2003 with multiple section championships.
North Carolina
No school in North Carolina has won more state championships than the Rams, who have put up 22 titles dating back to 1930.
Now: Butler (Matthews)The Bulldogs have been a consistent winner with a 200-48 record the past 20 years including three state championships at the 4A classification.
North Dakota
Known as just "Fargo" back when the school opened in the early 20th century, the Bruins have won 22 state championships over the years including 17 of them prior to 2000.
Now: BismarckThe Demons barely edge out rival Century thanks to more wins over the past 20 years (170 to 151) and more state titles (6 to 4).
Ohio
Maybe the greatest football dynasty of them all with nine national championships and 24 mythical state titles, the last coming in 1972.
Now: St. Edward (Lakewood)You could choose from a number of schools as the heir to Washington, including Archbishop Moeller (which dominated the 1970s and 80s) or St. Ignatius (which dominated the 1990s). We'll go with St. Edward, which has four state titles since 2010.
Oklahoma
Although a smaller school, Ada was dominant from 1951 to 1996, winning 19 state championships.
Now: JenksThe Trojans are closing in on Ada with 18 state championships, all of them occurring since 1979 and six in the past decade.
Oregon
Known simply as Medford when it was the only school in town, the Black Tornado were dominant in the 1950s and 60s with seven overall titles.
Now: Jesuit (Portland)At 195-40, Jesuit has more wins than any school in the state over the past 20 seasons including three state championships.
Pennsylvania
One of the winningest teams of all-time, Berwick has six state championships to its credit with three national championships.
Now: St. Joseph's Prep (Philadelphia)The Hawks have been ranked as the No. 1 team in the state five times over the past decade while playing in the Philadelphia Catholic League.
Rhode Island
Although in a lower classification, Burrillville holds the state record for state titles with 24, including 18 prior to 2000.
Now: Bishop Hendricken (Warwick)The Hawks have finished the season ranked No. 1 in the state 10 times over the past 12 years. The other two years they were ranked No. 2.
South Carolina
The Indians have won a state-best 17 state championships over the years, including dominant runs in the 1920s, 1930s and 1960s.
Now: Dutch Fork (Irmo)Although Gaffney won the AAAAA state championship in 2021, Dutch Fork has dominated the past half decade, winning a state state record five consecutive championships.
South Dakota
No school in the country has won more state championships, mythical or on the field, than the Warriors with 42. Of those, 36 occurred prior to 2000.
Now: Roosevelt (Sioux Falls)The Rough Riders have had the most consistent run over the past 20 years, finishing with fewer than seven wins only once while finishing in the top three in the state rankings 12 times.
Tennessee
Big Red racked up five state championships between 1915 and 1927 and have 15 overall.
Now: MaryvilleThe Rebels have been the team to beat in Tennessee for over two decades, winning 13 state championships since 2000.
Texas
Then: Waco
Although now closed, Waco was one of the top team in the nation in the 1920s through the 1950s with 20 district titles between 1920 and 1960, 11 undefeated regular seasons, six state championships and two national titles.
Now: Southlake Carroll (Southlake)The Dragons are 236-31 over the past 20 years and racked up three national championships in a row from 2004 to 2006.
Utah
Holder of 21 state championships, West won most of those crowns in the early part of the 20th century with 14 titles prior to World War I.
Now: Bingham (South Jordan)Bingham has been the team to beat for the better part of the 21st century, winning seven of its 11 state crowns since 2006.
Vermont
Rutland has won 19 state championships, which ranks as the most in state history.
Now: Hartford (White River Junction)With a record of 125-53 since 2003, Hartford has won 12 state championships, including five from 2007-12.
Virginia
The Crabbers won a pair of national titles in the 1990s and rank No. 1 in the state for total number of all-time wins (831). They also have 17 total state championships.
Now: Oscar Smith (Chesapeake)Winner of four state championships and ranked No. 1 in the state to start the 2022 season, Smith is 226-27 over the past two decades.
Washington
Under future Washington coach Enoch Bagshaw, Everett went 84-14 during the 1920s, winning a national championship in 1920.
Now: BellevuePosting a record of 219-19 since 2003, Bellevue has also won 12 state championships during that span.
West Virginia
The winningest school in state history with 842 wins, the Big Reds have won 17 state championships with 11 coming prior to 1960.
Now: MartinsburgSince 2010, Martinsburg has gone 14-0 six times and won nine state championships.
Wisconsin
Then: Wausau
Under coach Win Brockmeyer, Wausau won 230 games and lost just 33 with 19 ties during the 1930s to 1950s.
Now: WaunakeeNo school has won more games in Wisconsin over the past 20 years than Waunakee, which has 216 wins and just 21 losses.
Wyoming
Sheridan has won state championships in nine different decades with 14 of them coming prior to 1960.
Now: Sheridan
The Broncs not only won the first three state championships in Wyoming history, they also won in 2021 and have 11 state titles since 2000.
