Valley Christian of San Jose only new team after going 3-0-1 at All Faiths Classic.
Florida became the first state to get the postseason underway last week and each of the teams in the MaxPreps Top 25 high school baseball rankings got off to a strong start.
Seven of the eight Florida programs in the rankings won a district championship over the weekend with the lone exception being No. 1-ranked
IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.),
which does not compete in the state playoffs. The Ascenders won twice
last week and have two more games before wrapping up their season next
week.
Corona (Calif.),
the only other team to hold the No. 1 ranking this year, suffered
another blow when it fell to
Santiago (Corona), 1-0, in league
play. Panther pitchers
Seth Hernandez and
Ethin Bingaman
combined for 17 strikeouts but gave up an unearned run on an error in
the top of the seventh inning. Santiago's pitching staff
limited Corona to just one hit despite striking out only two batters.
The
Panthers rebounded Monday by blasting eight home runs in a 23-3 win
over
Centennial (Corona). Corona dropped from No. 3 to No. 6 due to two
previous wins over Santiago.
Archbishop Moeller (Cincinnati, Ohio)
was the only team to drop out of the MaxPreps Top 25 after going 2-1-1 at the
All Faiths Classic in Las Vegas. The Crusaders defeated
Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, Nev.) and
Brophy College Prep (Phoenix, Ariz.), but tied
Bishop O'Dowd (Oakland, Calif.) and lost to
Valley Christian (San Jose, Calif.).
Valley
Christian joined the rankings after going 3-0-1 in the tournament with
wins over a pair of MaxPreps Top 25 teams. In addition to beating Archbishop Moeller, the Warriors also topped
Aquinas (San Bernardino, Calif.) on Monday of last week, defeated
Jesuit (Carmichael, Calif.) and tied
North Cobb Christian (Kennesaw, Ga.).
Game of the week: Buchholz (Gainesville, Fla.) def.
Forest (Ocala, Fla.), 3-2. In a district playoff game, the Bobcats advanced to the district final after
Zac Brown
drew three straight balls after working a 1-2 count to walk with the
bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth. The run broke a 2-2 tie and
gave Buchholz the win.
Game to watch: Barbe (Lake Charles, La.) vs.
Central (Baton Rouge, La.).
The Buccaneers and Wildcats meet in the second round of the Non-Select
Division 1 playoffs. Barbe is the No. 2 seed while Central is No. 15.
The two teams have combined for eight of the past 10 state championships
in the largest enrollment division in Louisiana with Barbe winning six
and Central two.
Pitcher of the week: Aaron Watson of
Trinity Christian Academy (Jacksonville, Fla.) threw a five-inning no-hitter with eight strikeouts in a district playoff win over Episcopal of Jacksonville.
Hitter of the week: Anthony Murphy,
Corona. One of the top juniors in the country, Murphy blasted three
home runs with six RBI in a 23-3 win over Centennial (Corona). Murphy
leads Corona with nine home runs on the season.
Streaks: While
Owyhee (Meridian, Idaho) lost last week to see its 34-game win streak come to an end,
Harlem (Ga.)
had actually passed Owyhee for the longest active streak in the nation.
The Bulldogs finished the 2024 season with 12 straight wins and have
won 29 in a row in 2025 for a 41-game win streak.
