High school football rankings: St. John Bosco solidifies No. 1 spot in MaxPreps Top 25 with dominating 45-0 win over Serra in CIF Open Division finals

Braves win fourth state title under coach Jason Negro, become first team in 11 years to pitch shutout in California's top division.

No. 1 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) closed out its 2022 season adding another statement win with a 45-0 victory over Serra (San Mateo, Calif.) in the CIF Open Division state championship. The Braves became the first team since 2011 to post a shutout in the Open Division championship since De La Salle (Concord, Calif.) did it against Westlake (Westlake Village, Calif.).

The top-ranked Braves dominated from start to finish. The defense forced five turnovers and used a well-balanced offensive attack to take a 35-0 halftime lead. There was a running clock the entire fourth quarter, the ninth opponent the Braves put a running clock on this season.

One of the biggest movers in this week's MaxPreps Top 25 was Mill Creek (Hoschton, Ga.), which jumped six spots to No. 12. The Hawks handed Carrollton (Ga.) its first loss of the season with a 70-35 win in the AAAAAAA state championship. They broke the Georgia state championship game record for most points. The previous record was 62. It was Mill Creek's first football state championship. Five-star Alabama commit Caleb Downs capped off his great high school career rushing for three touchdowns and is among the short list of candidates to be named the 2022 MaxPreps National Player of the Year.

The loss dropped Carrollton two spots in the MaxPreps Top 25 to No. 22. Star freshman quarterback Julian Lewis broke the state championship game record throwing for 531 yards, adding five touchdown passes. He finished his freshman season with 4,118 yards passing and 48 touchdowns.



No. 8 North Shore (Houston) snapped the 54-game win streak of Westlake (Austin, Texas) in the Texas 6A Division 1 semifinals with a 49-34 victory. The Mustangs have won 28 in a row and face No. 9 Duncanville (Texas) in the 6A Division 1 championship at AT&T Stadium on Dec. 17. The Panthers beat Prosper (Texas) 41-0 in the other semifinal. This is the fourth time in five years these two square off in the state championship, the Mustangs have won the three previous meetings.The loss dropped the Chaparrals to No. 16.

The ESPN GEICO Bowl Series will feature one of the best games of the year on Dec. 17 as No. 4 Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) will host No. 5 Chaminade-Madonna (Hollywood, Fla.). The Lions just won their fourth state title over the last five years. The Gaels haven't played since Nov. 19 when they won their 12th state title since 2009.

One of the biggest games of the season takes place on Friday as No. 3 Central (Miami) and No. 10 American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.) lock horns in the 2M state championship on Dec. 16 at DRV PNK Stadium.

No. 7 St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and No. 14 Lakeland (Fla.) are also playing for state titles this week. The Raiders face Homestead (Fla.) in the 3M championship on Dec. 15 while the Dreadnaughts take on Venice (Fla.) in the 4S championship on Dec. 17.

DeSoto (Texas) was one of three new teams to join the MaxPreps Top 25 after beating Guyer (Denton, Texas) 47-28 to advance to the 6A Division 2 state championship. They accounted for 560 total yards with 437 coming on the ground. Sophomore running back Deondrae Riden Jr. led the way rushing for 224 yards and two touchdowns. The Eagles face Vandegrift (Austin, Texas) in the 6A Division 2 state championship on Dec. 17 at AT&T Stadium at 3 p.m.

Columbus (Miami) and Kahuku (Hawaii) were the two other teams to join the MaxPreps Top 25. The Explorers play Apopka (Fla.) in the 4M state championship on Dec. 17. The Red Raiders won the Open Division state title and their only two losses this season came against No. 1 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) and No. 11 St. Frances Academy (Baltimore).
