By Zack Poff Nov 30, 2024, 2:30pm

Keelon Russell, Dakorien Moore go off leading No. 3 Duncanville to 42-20 win over The Woodlands.

For the first time this season No. 1 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) was in a competitive game. The top-ranked Monarchs held off No. 7 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) for a 31-24 to win their second straight CIF Southern Section Division 1 championship. It was the first game this season the Monarchs were within one score in the fourth quarter.

Oregon-bound running back Jordon Davison carried the ball 29 times for a season-high 196 yards and three touchdowns. His first score came in the second quarter to give the Monarchs a 11-0 lead. The Braves freshman quarterback Koa Malau'ulu connected with Madden Williams to cut the deficit to 11-7 with 3:57 left in the first half. Malau'ulu finished the game throwing for a season-high 297 yards and two scores.

Davison rushed for his second score of the night to give Mater Dei a 17-7 lead with just over two minutes remaining in the first half. St. John Bosco responded on its next drive as Malau'ulu found freshman Darren Tubbs for a 53-yard score to make it 17-14 with 1:15 left.

The Monarchs extended their lead to 24-14 with just over six minutes left in the third quarter after a 15-yard score from Davison. Maliq Allen cut the lead to 24-21 after a 2-yard score with 2:11 left in the third quarter. The touchdown was set up by an 89-yard reception by Carson Clark on a perfectly executed screen pass.

Washington-bound quarterback Dash Beierly connected with 2025 Oklahoma commit Marcus Harris for a 7-yard touchdown to make it 31-21 with 6:14 remaining. CJ Wallace made a 48-yard field goal with 2:12 left to cut the deficit to 31-24.

Daryus Dixson recovered the Braves onside kick attempt and Davison had a 26-yard run that sealed the win for Mater Dei to run out the clock. Dixson also had an interception in the first quarter to set up the Monarchs first score.

Mater Dei is one win away from going wire-to-wire as the top-ranked team in the MaxPreps Top 25. They will most likely face No. 22 De La Salle (Concord, Calif.) in the CIF Open Division state championship on Dec. 13.
