Bruins hold slight lead over Sacred Heart of Kentucky in race to become named the top athletic program in the nation for 2024-25.
Cherry Creek (Greenwood Village, Colo.) has seen its lead in the MaxPreps Cup narrow since the end of the fall sports season but the Bruins are still in first place after the conclusion of the 2024-25 winter sports season.
The Colorado school held a 184-point lead over
Lone Peak (Highland, Utah) —
1,337 to 1,153
— during the fall after winning five state championships and placing in the national rankings for four sports.
Cherry Creek added the Class 5A crown in girls swimming during the winter and maintained its spot at No. 1 in the MaxPreps Cup standings with 1,551 points.
Sacred Heart (Louisville, Ky.) moved up to No. 2 with 1,536 points. Lone Peak is in third at 1,449 points.
The MaxPreps Cup recognizes the top high school athletic programs in the country based on state championships, state runner-up finishes and placement in national rankings. The algorithm takes into account the size of the state, the popularity of the sport, the enrollment level of the school and the number of schools that compete in the enrollment division.
A total of 36 new schools entered the top 100 in the MaxPreps Cup standings with
Hoover (Ala.) making the highest debut at No. 13. The Buccaneers won state championships in boys and girls basketball and boys and girls indoor track along with a runner-up finish in girls bowling. The boys basketball team also finished ranked No. 6 nationally.

Wayzata (Plymouth, Minn.) rose from No. 16 to No. 12 with state championships in boys basketball and boys skiing.
Cherry Creek has a strong chance to go wire-to-wire as the MaxPreps Cup champion. Among the spring sports contested in Colorado, the Bruins are the defending state champions in baseball and boys swimming and they are a year removed from a state championship in girls tennis — a sport where they have won 39 titles.
