Football Game Preview: Magdalena Steers vs. Mountainair Mustangs

The Magdalena Steers will square off against the Mountainair Mustangs at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

Magdalena is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of New Mexico's top teams: Animas, who was ranked 17th at the time (Magdalena was ranked sixth). The Steers breezed past the Panthers to the tune of 58-7 on Friday. Winning may never get old, but the Steers sure are getting used to it with their fourth in a row.

This one was won in the trenches and the lion's share of the credit has to go to Ky Stephens and Prescott Herrera. Stephens rushed for 49 yards and a pair of touchdowns while Herrera rushed for 75 yards and four TDs on only six carries. Those 75 rushing yards gave Herrera a new career-high. Nathan Bruton was another key player, gaining 71 total yards and a touchdown.

Meanwhile, while Mountainair put up plenty of points on Friday, the same can't be said for Carrizozo. The Mustangs blew past the Grizzlies, posting a 57-0 win. The Mustangs have beaten the Grizzlies the last five times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Grizzlies has come to flipping the script.

Magdalena's victory bumped their record up to 4-1. As for Mountainair, they now have a winning record of 3-2.
