Baseball Game Preview: Newton Rams vs. Westlake Lions

The Newton Rams will challenge the Westlake Lions at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Newton is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.4 runs per game this season.

Newton will roll into the match after a wild two-game stretch: they only put up two runs on Wednesday, then bounced right back against Heritage on Thursday. Newton put the hurt on Heritage with a sharp 18-1 victory. The Rams haven't had any issues with the Patriots recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive win against them.

Caden Brown was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching three innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 2-for-2 with five RBI, two runs, and one double. That's the most hits he has posted since back in April of 2024.

In other batting news, Devontae Hardeman was a standout: he scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-2. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in RBI (three). Jonathon Andrews was another key player, scoring two runs while going 1-for-1.

Newton always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .649. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Heritage only posted an OBP of .267.

Meanwhile, Westlake was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their fifth straight defeat. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 6-5 heartbreaker at the hands of Carrollton.

Westlake's loss dropped their record down to 5-8. As for Newton, their victory bumped their record up to 9-4.
