Opening night in Newton-Conover was more than just a football game—it was a night of remembrance. The Red Devil community gathered to honor legendary Head Coach Nick Bazzle and his 2008 State Championship team, a golden era in program history. Now retired, Bazzle watched from the stands as his son, Matt Wilson, took the helm as head coach, tasked with rebuilding the program from the ground up.
Across the field stood Hickory’s Joe Glass—a coach whose philosophy was shaped by studying leaders like Bazzle. Under his guidance, the Red Tornadoes have become one of the most competitive and polarizing teams in the league. And on this night, Hickory stormed through with unstoppable force, defeating Newton-Conover 42–14.
