One of the most explosive moments from Round 3 came late in the matchup between Maiden and Newton-Conover, when Blue Devils DB Kierian Shaw (#4) delivered a collision heard across Gurley Stadium.

Midway through the drive, Red Devils playmaker Naiym Robinson (#2) caught the ball in stride along the sideline — but before he could turn upfield, Shaw closed the gap with elite speed and unloaded a textbook, full-force sideline hit that sent Robinson flying out of bounds.

Passing the Torch | TRIPLE: Keepers of the Flame

Opening night in Newton-Conover was more than just a football game—it was a night of remembrance. The Red Devil community gathered to honor legendary Head Coach Nick Bazzle and his 2008 State Championship team, a golden era in program history. Now retired, Bazzle watched from the stands as his son, Matt Wilson, took the helm as head coach, tasked with rebuilding the program from the ground up.

Across the field stood Hickory’s Joe Glass—a coach whose philosophy was shaped by studying leaders like Bazzle. Under his guidance, the Red Tornadoes have become one of the most competitive and polarizing teams in the league. And on this night, Hickory stormed through with unstoppable force, defeating Newton-Conover 42–14.

What was meant to be a night of celebration became a sobering reminder: the road to redemption will not be easy. But in high school football, victories aren’t only measured in championships. They’re found in the lessons of perseverance, brotherhood, and raising young men to face life beyond the fiel
