The Smithfield Sentinels will venture away from home to face off against the North Providence Cougars at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. The last four games Smithfield has played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.
On Friday, Smithfield needed a bit of extra time to put away Coventry. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 5-4 win over the Oakers. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Sentinels have posted against the Oakers since May 17, 2021.
Jacob Sylvester was incredible, getting on base in all five of his plate appearances with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base. That home run was his first of the season. The team also got some help courtesy of Luke Dwyer, who got on base in two of his five plate appearances with two stolen bases.
Meanwhile, North Providence had already won seven in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 7 runs) and they went ahead and made it eight on Sunday. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Saints a 10-0 shutout. That's two games straight that the Cougars have won by exactly ten runs.
Not much got past Kris Pacific, who gave up just four hits and racked up six Ks to keep St. Raphael Academy off the board.
At the plate, North Providence let Anthony Roman and Jayden Allard run wild. Roman went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, two doubles, and one RBI, while Allard got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. That's the most runs Roman has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Gabe Ramirez, who went 1-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double.
Smithfield's record now sits at 11-8. As for North Providence, their record is now 13-5-1.
Smithfield beat North Providence 6-2 when the teams last played back in May of 2025. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Sentinels since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
