High school baseball: Pitchers with 40 or more career victories

The town of Lansing (Iowa) has just under 1,000 people, but Kee High School, with enrollment of just over 100, has a huge presence on the MaxPreps list of the Most Career Baseball Pitching Wins.

Coached by Gene Schultz, the all-time coaching wins leader for the spring season (or in Iowa's case summer season) with 1,578 wins, Kee has seven pitchers win over 40 career games, topped by Terry Heiderscheit who holds the national record for most wins in four spring (summer) seasons with 69.

Heiderscheit, however, is not the all-time winningest pitcher. That distinction goes to Kevin Lomon of Cameron (Okla.), who won 86 games over the course of the fall and spring seasons between 1987 and 1990, including 62 in a row. Lomon edged out Mike Moore of Hydro-Eakly, who had 85 wins during the fall-spring seasons in the late 1970s before embarking on a 14-year Major League career.

The most wins by a spring-season-only pitcher is Rich Harrelson of Tishomingo County (Iuka, Miss.), who won 71 games from 1988 to 1992. His mark includes 16 wins as an eighth-grader, which aren't counted toward the record by the National Federation of High Schools.

MaxPreps list of career baseball pitching wins, however, includes fall and spring season pitchers, pitchers with more than four varsity seasons and summer season players. The list includes nearly 175 players, but the list is heavy on players from the 1970s and 1980s, the heydays for high career pitching win totals.

The rules have changed drastically since the 1980s with health measures put in place to limit innings pitched in a week and pitches thrown in a game. Some states have also lowered the number of games played during a regular season. All of those measures have lowered the average number of wins per season and have thus limited the number of pitchers who have won 40 or more wins in a career.

The first pitcher to win over 40 games in a career is believed to be Dean Chance of Northwestern (West Salem, Ohio). The 11-year MLB pitcher and Cy Young winner in 1964, won 52 games in high school school career, according to research by Tim Hudak. He also had 16 no-hitters in his prep career from 1956 to 1959.

David Clyde of Houston Westchester was the next spring-only pitcher to surpass 50 wins, topping Chance by one run with 53 in 1973. Ken Cvejdlik of Jefferson (Council Bluffs, Iowa) moved the record to 54 wins in 1974 and Steve Streator of Webster (N.C.) upped the record to 61 wins in 1977. Heiderscheit then boosted the record all the way up to 69 in 1978.

The most recent pitcher to roll up over 60 wins is Jake Hilmer of North Linn (Iowa), who won 61 games in five seasons between 2015 and 2019.

The career wins list includes multiple professional players. Aside from Chance and Moore, other MLB pitchers include Mike Boddicker of Norway (Iowa), Scott McGregor of El Segundo (Calif.) and Storm Davis of University Christian of Jacksonville (Fla.).
