High school football rankings: Chaminade-Madonna moves to No. 6 in MaxPreps Top 25 after statement win

Chaminade-Madonna (Hollywood, Fla.) had the most impressive win of the weekend, beating previously-ranked Bergen Catholic (Oradell, N.J.) 61-21 as five-star wide receiver Jeremiah Smith hauled in 16 receptions for 316 yards and three touchdowns. The Lions climb one spot to No. 6 in the MaxPreps Top 25 high school football rankings.

Chaminade-Madonna faces a big road test Friday at No. 15 American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.) followed by a showdown at No. 5 Central (Miami) on Sept. 21. The Lions have outscored their first three opponents 137-39.

No. 2 Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) added another statement win against a MaxPreps Top 25 team, beating its final out-of-state opponent Centennial (Corona, Calif.) 56-28. Micah Alejado threw for five scores and four-star tight end Elija Lofton accounted for three total touchdowns. It was the third win for the Las Vegas power against a nationally-ranked team. The loss dropped the Huskies eight spots to No. 21.

No. 10 St. Edward (Lakewood, Ohio) and No. 11 St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) both needed last second field goals to pull out wins. Kellen Moyer made a 29-yard field goal to beat Elder (Cincinnati) 34-33 in a game that saw seven second-half lead changes. Francesco Pileggi connected on a 19-yard field as St. Thomas Aquinas pulled off a wild 37-36 win against Cocoa (Fla.).

Chandler (Ariz.) was one of two new teams to join the MaxPreps Top 25 checking in at No. 20 after a dominant 35-10 win over previously-ranked Orange Lutheran (Orange, Calif.). Blake Heffron and Ca'Lil Valentine combined to rush for 184 yards and four scores. The Wolves have outscored their first three opponents 140-23 and join Liberty (Peoria, Ariz.) as the second team from the Grand Canyon State in the national rankings.

Norland (Miami) becomes the seventh team from Florida in the MaxPreps Top 25. The Vikings check in at No. 25 and have outscored their first three opponents 168-40 with a roster that features 13 players rated as a three-star or higher according to 247Sports. MaxPreps Top 25 football rankings
