Video: Hunter Potthoff's highlights vs. Lexington High
See the McCook High player in action this season. With the Nebraska boys subdistrict basketball tournaments for Classes C1, C2, D1 and D2 approaching next week, and district competition beginning for Classes A and B the week after, we will look at which subdistricts/districts could be the waterloo for some very good Nebraska boys basketball teams in 2015-16.
And we decided to share our findings with you, the fan.
While the collective winning percentage for each subdistrict/district, and the average MaxPreps ranking for the teams assigned to those subdistrict/district tournaments, were considered for this Top 10, they weren't the only info used for the order in which these uber-competitive tournaments were chosen.
The top spot, however, was a cinch to fill. Consisting of Alliance (12-7), Gering (14-7), McCook (11-11), Scottsbluff (18-3) and Sidney (21-2), the Class B-6 district carried the highest winning percentage (.717) collectively and produced MaxPreps' second lowest MaxPreps ranking average (10.2). Four of the five teams in the B-6 are ranked in MaxPreps' Class B Top 10.
The Class D2-1 subdistrict, our No. 2 selection, earned its stripes by posting the top MaxPreps ranking average of the subdistricts/districts ranked in the Top 10. Parkview Christian (fourth), Sterling (fifth) and Falls City Sacred Heart (10th) are all Top 10 teams in Nebraska's smallest classification, while Lewiston is ranked 18th.
Rounding out the top three is the Class D2-3 subdistrict consisting of Bancroft-Rosalie (11-10), Cornerstone Christian (0-9), Humphrey St. Francis (22-0) and Mead (19-2). Should St. Francis, which leads Class D-2 in the NSAA's district seeding points, meet No. 2 Mead, the winner could battle No. 3 Riverside for the district championship and a guaranteed spot in the boys state basketball tournament in Lincoln, March 10-12.
We did select a Class A game for this Top 10 since Class A's district assignments have not been announced yet. While a regular season game may not carry the same importance to some teams as one of these tournaments, it is a big one to say the least. The winner of the Class A tilt featuring MaxPreps No. 4 Papillion-LaVista (18-3) at No. 3 Omaha Creighton Prep (18-3) Feb. 19 could carry a ton of momentum going into next week's district action.
Below, listed under each subdistrict/district, are the teams that will compete in that tournament as well as each school's record through last Saturday's games and the MaxPreps ranking of each school as of Monday.

The Junior Jays, whose only losses of the season are to Kearney and twice to top-ranked Omaha South, upended the Monarchs, 77-64, on Dec. 30. Will Papillion-LaVista reverse the score on the road? Creighton Prep is led by
Will Schenken (12.8) and
Drew Homa (10.1), while Papillion-LaVista gets its scoring punch from sophomore
Ed Chang (16.9), junior
Ayo Akinwole (15.2) and senior
Chad Lechtenberg (15.1). Besides the earlier loss to Creighton Prep, the Monarchs have also fallen to Iowa power Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln (18-1) and the top-ranked Packers.
