Video: Tate Martell Ultimate HighlightsSee the Ohio State commit in action.Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas)
and IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.)
are the top two teams in the nation, and the dream matchup is not scheduled to take place this season.
But that didn't stop IMG Academy from starting a firestorm by collectively chanting "We want Gorman" following their 16-6 victory over Bishop Sullivan Catholic last Saturday.
That caused Bishop Gorman quarterback and team leader Tate Martell
to fire back on Twitter.
So it begs the question: What if these two heavyweights could collide on the field instead of just social media and chants?
There would be over 40 players with Power 5 conference offers and possessing three stars or higher according to 247Sports - and they all would be on one football field. We thought it would be fun to break down this fantasy high school Super Bowl to see who might have the edge.
We begin with No. 1 Bishop Gorman, and you can't look any farther than the mystic Martell. The nation's No. 2 dual-threat quarterback and self-assured winner owns a perfect 41-0 mark as the Gaels' starting signal-caller over the past three seasons. The frontrunner for National Player of the Year has utilized dynamic weapons like five-star receiver Tyjon Lindsey
and Cal commit Biaggio Walsh
to put up 1,969 passing yards, 1,098 rushing yards, 52 total touchdowns and a 139 passer rating in 13 games. The Ohio State commit has ignited an explosive Gaels offense to average 50 points per game.
Let's not forget about the Gaels' relentless defense headlined by four-star safety Bubba Bolden
and Ohio State commit Haskell Garrett
. Bishop Gorman's ultra-athletic defensive unit has allowed an average of eight points per game and notched five shutouts. Oh, and the Gaels have also reeled off 52 straight victories (second-longest active win streak in America) and won by an average of 42 points per game this season.
Bishop Gorman has defeated two teams currently in the Xcellent 25 National Football Rankings presented by the Army National Guard and potentially six squads inside the top 100 this year if it ends up meeting and conquering Liberty (Henderson, Nev.) for its eighth-consecutive Nevada state title.
"When you look back at the Gaels' non-conference schedule, going undefeated is one of the hardest things we've seen over the last decade," MaxPreps' Zack Poff said.
Undefeated IMG Academy is led by Texas A&M commit Kellen Mond
. The nation's fourth-rated dual-threat quarterback has smoothly posted 1,803 passing yards, 757 rushing yards and 36 total touchdowns in 11 contests. His electrifying targets like Brian Hightower
, Jhamon Ausbon
, Asa Martin
, Tre' McKitty
and Emmanuel Greene
have helped the Ascenders average 36.4 points per game and win by an average 27 points per game against elite opposition this year.
IMG Academy's stacked, physical defense is headed by Alabama commit Dylan Moses
and LSU commit Grant Delpit
and has only yielded an average of nine points per game with five shutouts. The Ascenders vanquished two squads currently in the Xcellent 25 and four teams inside the top 100.
"IMG Academy has amazing depth and athletes on defense," MaxPreps Senior Writer Mitch Stephens said. "The Ascenders have only played 11 games and would be fresh on the defensive side, which could be a problem for Gorman. That all being said, I think Tate Martell is the best game manager and leader in high school football. I love the ball in Kellen Mond's hands anytime, but with a close game and a national title on the line, there's no one better suited or prepared than Martell."
If only we could witness these two high-powered teams break the scoreboard and display a game for the ages in AT&T Stadium for all the marbles.
For now, we'll have to settle for "What if?"
