Basketball Recap: Montgomery Extends Winning Streak to Five

Montgomery came tearing into Saturday's match with four straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 28 points) and they left with even more momentum. They managed a 44-39 victory over the Helix Highlanders. Given the Aztecs' advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 233rd, while the Highlanders are ranked 468th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Helix's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Cheyenne McMillan, who posted 17 points and three steals. The dominant performance also gave McMillan a new career-high in assists (four). Michaelle Whyte was another key player, putting up 12 points.

Montgomery is on a roll lately: they've won nine of their last 11 games, which provided a nice bump to their 11-4 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 51.6 points per game. As for Helix, their loss dropped their record down to 7-5.

Montgomery wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, an 82-15 win against Valhalla on the 8th. As for Helix, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 68-36 defeat against Bishop's on the 8th.
