Newton extended their winning streak to four on Monday, bumping them up to 16-2. They put the hurt on the Marshall Lions with a sharp 12-2 victory. Considering the Eagles have won seven contests by more than six runs this season, Monday's blowout was nothing new.
Carson Barthelme made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out six batters over six innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off three hits. Barthelme was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with two runs and one stolen base. That's the most hits he has posted over his last 11 matchups.
In other batting news, Quincy Fulton was incredible, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with three stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI. Maddox Horner was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI.
Newton was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .483. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .375 or higher in four consecutive games.
As for Marshall, they have been struggling recently as they've lost five of their last six contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-9 record this season. Having soared to a lofty ten runs in the game before, they couldn't push the score so high this time.
On Marshall's side, Tucker Osborn was cooking despite his team's loss, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. That double was Osborn's first of the season.
Looking ahead, Newton will challenge Paris at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for Marshall, they will face off against West Vigo at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Vikings' pitching crew has only allowed 3.2 runs per game this season, so the Lions' hitters will have their work cut out for them.
