Early singing day got off with a bang as
Travis Hunter, the No. 1 overall recruit according to 247Sports, flipped his commitment choosing to sign at Jackson State for head coach Deion Sanders.
The
Collins Hill (Suwanee, Ga.) five-star had a verbal commitment to Florida State, but Wednesday added the Tigers cap to his table and chose play for Sanders, a player Hunter has been compared with throughout his prep career.
"Florida State has always been a beacon for me," Hunter wrote on Twitter. "It's a ream that is hard to let go of, but sometimes we are called to step into a bigger future than the one we imagined for ourselves. For me, that future is at Jackson State University."
He added that Historically Black Colleges and Universities have a rich football history and tradition, noting greats like Jerry Rice, Doug Williams and, Jackson State alumni Walter Payton.
"I want to be part of that history, and more, I want to be part of that future," he wrote.
Of course, high school football fans get one last shot to see Hunter in his Collins Hill jersey before donning the Blue and White of the Tigers. Hunter and his Eagle teammates play in the ESPN GEICO State Champions Bowl series at 1 p.m. Saturday against Washington state 4A champion Graham-Kapowsin (Graham, Wash.).
Hunter, who was the
MaxPreps No. 1 cornerback and No.1 wide receiver entering the 2021 season, led the Eagles to their first state title with a 24-8 win over Milton in the Georgia AAAAAAA finals on Dec. 11. Injured for part of the season, Hunter hauled in 76 receptions for over 1,100 yards and 10 touchdowns
despite missing five games. The nation's top-rated
recruit posted 23 tackles, four interceptions and forced a fumble on
defense.
Collins Hill heads into Saturday's matchup having won every game by at
least 15 points, outscoring its opposition 558-83 with six shutouts
this season to finish as the top-ranked team in Georgia.
And it's perhaps fitting that Hunter's final high school game will be on Saturday as fans will see a lot more of him on Saturdays to come.
