The California City Ravens will venture away from home to challenge the Corcoran Panthers at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. California City is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10.7 runs per game this season.
California City is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Friday. They put the hurt on Legacy Christian Academy with a sharp 13-6 win. The high-scoring effort was just what the Ravens needed considering they were shut out in their previous game.
Donnie Hogan was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out six batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off five hits. Hogan was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Corcoran came tearing into Friday's matchup with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 6.3 runs), and they left with even more momentum. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Cowboys a 5-0 shutout.
Not much got past Brennan Botill, who gave up just two hits and racked up 11 Ks to keep Riverdale off the board. Botill has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Cortez Portillo was excellent, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one double. Those three hits gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Brayden Espinoza, who went 2-for-3 with two runs and one double.
Corcoran was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .409. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .318 or higher in four consecutive contests.
California City's record is now 19-9-1. As for Corcoran, their record now sits at 20-6.
Tuesday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. California City hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .338. However, it's not like Corcoran struggles in that department as they've averaged .336. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
California City came up short against Corcoran in their previous matchup back in March, falling 7-3. Can the Ravens avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
