High-scoring high school football games occur for a number of reasons. Some are purely accidental. Kickoff, punt and interception returns can turn otherwise lopsided games into monumental blowouts. Additionally, high-scoring games often occur at the beginning of the season, particularly the first game of the year, and they usually occur between grossly mismatched schools.
MaxPreps has researched and compiled a list of the highest-scoring game for each season dating back to 1900. Along with the score and the date of the game, we've also sought to give some notes on why the games were so lopsided.
In the early part of the century, teams that gave up a touchdown could elect to kick off rather than receive the kick. Because the forward pass was in its infancy, the belief was that pinning a team deep in its own territory was the best strategy. That didn't always prove to be the case as 200-point games occurred during this time.
Once the kickoff rule changed in the early 1930s, high-scoring games began to wane to the point of being nonexistent. Many of the 100-point games in the 1950s and 60s occurred in games pitting all-Black schools in Georgia, Texas, Florida and Tennessee which reached their heyday during this time frame. All-Black schools had the high score in 1950-52, 1955, 1959-61, 1963, 1966-69. Most schools in the nation had finally desegregated by 1970.
With the advent of the open passing game in the 21st century, high-scoring games were on the rise again. After five 100-point games between 1975 and 2004, there have been seven such games in the past 15 years, including a 107-90 game between Meadville (Pa.) and DuBois (Pa.) in 2015 that saw multiple national records set.
Sources for the list included luckyshow.org by Paul Lutcher, which compiles 100-point high school football games; Joe Lee Smith's Texas High School Football History; Georgia High School Football Historians Association; Cal-Hi Sports Record Book and Almanac by Mark and Nelson Tennis; state association record books, MaxPreps scoreboard and various newspapers via newspapers.com.
The list is a fluid one and there may be some high scores that have not been included, especially for those years where a 100-point game did not occur. For any additions or corrections, please e-mail Kevin Askeland at kevinaskeland65@gmail.com.
