Skyler Quam got the Boras Classic off to a good start Monday morning as the three
Elk Grove (Calif.) pitchers combined to no-hit
Excel Academy (Stockton, Calif.) in a 10-0 win at Dan McAuliffe Field in Elk Grove.
Barnes went the first three innings and struck out seven without walking anybody, while Jack and Quam each pitched one frame and had one and two strikeouts, respectively. The Thundering Herd was one error and two hit batsmen away from a five-inning perfect game.
Offensively,
Ty Madrigal sparked the Herd with a pair of doubles.
Nick Madrigal also had two hits and drove in two runs, while
Robert Ortega had a pair of RBIs.
Derek Hill and
Micheal Wright each had a triple as well.

Elk Grove advanced to the second round and rallied to defeat
Yuba City (Calif.), 11-4. The Herd broke a 3-3 tie with three runs in the fifth and five in the sixth. Hill had another big game, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a double.
Dom Nunez led the offensive attack with a 3-for-3 effort that included two doubles, a triple and two RBIs.
Ryan Tellez and Nick Madrigal also doubled in the win.
David Smith got the win, going six innings and giving up three runs, one of them earned, on six hits with five strikeouts and no walks.
Devin Pettengill and
Cooper Goldby each had two hits to lead Yuba City.
The Honkers advanced to the second round with a 5-4 comeback win over
Del Oro (Loomis, Calif.). They rallied with two runs in the bottom of the sixth and three more in the seventh to get the win.
Justin Noreen doubled home Goldby with the winning run. Pettengill was 2-for-3 while Goldby had a double and two RBIs.
Del Oro bounced back to defeat Excel Academy 11-1. Keith Heyer was 2-for-2 with a double and three RBIs.
Therin Heryford and
Trent Homan each had a double as well.
In the bottom half of the bracket,
Pleasant Grove (Elk Grove, Calif.) opened with a 4-1 win over
Rodriguez (Fairfield, Calif.) while
Deer Valley (Antioch, Calif.) edged
Pioneer (Woodland, Calif.) 8-6.

Josh Adams had a sacrifice fly in the third inning and a solo home run in the sixth to pace Pleasant Grove.
Trevor Widler added two base hits while
Nico Toni and
Spencer Jemes each had a double.
Davy Duncan was 2-for-3 for Rodriguez.
Deer Valley overcame a 6-5 deficit with a run in the seventh and two runs in the eighth for an extra-inning, 8-6 win.
Devante Boyd scored the tying run in the seventh inning.
Matt Gavello and Vistalli each had three hits for Deer Valley while
Thomas Galart and
Marcus Vidales were both 3-for-4 for Pioneer.
Pleasant Grove advanced to the third round with a 4-2 win over Deer Valley in the late game Monday. Scoring all of its runs in the bottom of the third, Pleasant Grove held off a late rally by Deer Valley to advance.
Bronson Grubbs had a two-run double in the third while
Nico Toni had a run-scoring single and
Austin Friello had a sacrifice fly.
Rodriguez dropped Pioneer 7-0 in the consolation bracket.
Albert Jakubiszen and
Richie Straub each had two RBIs with Straub and Duncan each rapping a double for Rodriguez.
Elk Grove advances to play Wednesday at 7 p.m. against an opponent to be determined. Pleasant Grove is in the other semifinal game, which will be held at 7 p.m. The remaining semifinalists will be determined Tuesday.
