An early verbal commit to USC, Armstead began to look around due to issues his brother Armond experienced during his senior season with the Trojans. He then ruled out the Trojans and was considered a lock to sign with Cal. But Tosh Lupoi's departure to Washington just days before Armstead was expected to announce altered his plans to enroll early. Notre Dame and Auburn entered the fray but in the end, the 6-foot-8, 280-pound defensive lineman went to the Ducks.
