Archbishop Mitty (San Jose, Calif.) climbs to No. 1 in the latest MaxPreps Top 25 high school girls basketball rankings on the strength of its second straight Nike Tournament of Champions title.
"We want to move the needle forward on our improvement because we want
to
win the last game," Archbishop Mitty head coach Sue Phillips told MaxPreps. "That's the
game that matters most to us."
Mitty has reached the Open Division title game in each of the past three seasons, falling to Etiwanda twice and
Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth) in 2022. The Monarchs' last state championship came in 2015 when they won the Division II crown.
Ontario Christian, which starts two freshman and super sophomore
Kaleena Smith, has played a national schedule thus far and has a chance to earn one back against Mitty as the teams will meet Jan. 4 at the SI20 Showcase in the San Francisco Bay Area.
