Or is she?
Harris entered the 2025-26 season as California's career 3-point leader and broke the single-season mark as a junior with 191 when she led Faith Christian to the NorCal Division VI championship.
With 500 threes to start this season, Harris was in striking distance of
Aaliyah Chavez of
Monterey (Lubbock, Texas), who buried 639 triples from 2022–25. Chavez is now starring as a freshman at Oklahoma, averaging 18.8 points, 4.1 assists and 4.0 rebounds per game for the ranked Sooners.

But according to the
MaxPreps National High School Girls Basketball Record Book, there still remains one major – and likely impossible – hurdle for Harris to clear to become the career 3-point leader.
Downey Christian was a member of the Sunshine Independent Athletic Association during Newman's career. The governing body along with many others around the country allow student-athletes below the traditional 9-12 grade range to compete in high school sports in varying circumstances.
By comparison, the California Interscholastic Federation bylaws state that student-athletes "may not practice or compete in any contest at any high school, even if they have registered for classes and/or paid a non-refundable registration fee, until they have graduated from the 8th grade."
Newman's 3-point total during her final four years of high school is 422, which would rank her 43rd according to the MaxPreps record book. It's worth noting that she missed a significant amount of time after suffering a torn ACL, which limited her to a total of 32 games between her junior and senior seasons.
Both players were coached by their fathers. Jaden was coached by her dad, Jamie, at Downey Christian, and Lauren is coached by her father, Geoff, at Faith Christian. Newman currently plays at Cal State Los Angeles while Harris is committed to Long Beach State.
Jamie Newman said he has heard from plenty of people over the years who try to discredit his daughter's records.
"If you look back at the `60s and `70s, people were playing 50 or 60 games a year," Jamie Newman said. "It's all different. Some kids play four or five years. My kids played eight to 10 years, but they did it when they were little. They never stayed back a grade. They never reclassified. They just played so young."
Geoff Harris is not one to diminish Newman's accomplishments. In fact, he has a lot of praise for how the Newman family helped grow the sport of girls basketball.
"All these young women deserve recognition for being excellent in their specific environments," Geoff Harris said. "What that family did for basketball media was groundbreaking and I think there are a lot of players today that fell in love with basketball because of the Newman family."
Lauren Harris is one of just five high school players to reach 600 career 3-pointers. She began her senior season with 13 consecutive games of at least five made threes, a streak that extended to 24 games dating back to the end of last season. Stephen Curry's longest such streak in his entire career is nine during the 2018–19 season.
Entering this week, Harris is leading the nation in scoring at 38.3 points per game. Her 6.9 3-point field goals per game were also tops in the nation with 10 games to go in the regular season. She came into Wednesday just 27 triples away from Chavez's mark of 639.
While Harris remains on pace to break the record for 3-pointers during what many consider to be a traditional high school career, the true record-holder may forever be up for debate.
