High school football rankings: MaxPreps Top 25 showdown between No. 1 St. John Bosco and No. 2 Bishop Gorman to set table for 2026 season

No. 1 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) and No. 2 Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, Nev.) are set for the 16th battle between high school football's top-ranked teams since 2000 on Friday. Gorman, which will serve as the host this week, has won two previous meetings against Bosco with the last coming in 2016.

Tate Martell led the Las Vegas power to a 35-20 win in the last matchup. Martell threw for 183 yards and three touchdowns to go with 111 yards on the ground and another score. The Gaels erased an early 14-0 lead and outscored the Braves 35-6 to win their 42nd consecutive game. Bishop Gorman was ranked No. 1 in the MaxPreps Top 25 while St. John Bosco was ranked No. 3.

In 2014, Martell led Gorman to a 34-31 win. He finished with 228 yards passing and two touchdowns to go with another score on the ground. The Braves fell behind 27-3 and Josh Rosen nearly led them to a comeback win by throwing for 264 yards and three touchdowns. The Gaels were ranked No. 5 in the MaxPreps Top 25 while the Braves were No. 4. 

Bishop Gorman started its season last week with a 41-0 win over Somerset Academy Losee (North Las Vegas) in a game that was called at halftime due to lightning.

Chaminade-Madonna (Hollywood, Fla.) was the only new team to join this week's MaxPreps Top 25 after North Gwinnett (Suwanee, Ga.) upset then-No. 13 Grayson (Loganville, Ga.) 37-22 in the Corky Kell Classic. 

Nineteen MaxPreps Top 25 teams begin action this week. No. 12 Baylor (Chattanooga, Tenn.) hosts No. 13 Brentwood Academy (Brentwood, Tenn.) in the only other nationally-ranked showdown. MaxPreps Top 25 football rankings
