Maddox Porter of
Battle Ground Academy (Franklin, Tenn.) is the 2025 MaxPreps National Freshman of the Year. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound wide receiver joins the likes of Nick Bosa (2012), Trevor Lawrence (2014), Arch Manning (2019), Gunner Stockton (2018) and Bryce Underwood (2021) as recipients of the honor.
Porter led the Wildcats to a 13-1 record and Division II Class AA state title, the school's first since 2003. He hauled in 78 catches for 1,547 yards and 27 touchdowns, coming up one score short of the state record of 28.
In a 61-27 win over Franklin Road Academy (Nashville) in the state championship game, Porter posted nine grabs for 152 yards and a score.
His season-high came in a 35-0 win over Grace Christian Academy (Franklin) when he had 13 catches for 245 yards and three touchdowns.
Porter is on track to shatter some notable TSSAA state records after a standout freshman campaign. Davis Howell owns the state record for most career receptions (358) and career receiving yards (4,830) while Damien Dodson owns the receiving touchdown mark with 58.
He joins
Graham Simpson of
Westview (Martin) as the second straight player from Tennessee to be named MaxPreps National Freshman of the Year. Simpson was the first recipient of the award from the state last season. Porter is the first wide receiver to claim the award.
Porter has already landed 19 offers according to 247Sports, which include the likes of Alabama, Arizona State, Auburn, Georgia, Michigan, Tennessee and Vanderbilt.
