The biggest high school football game of the 2022 season took place Friday at the Rose Bowl in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 championship and it lived up to the hype. No. 2 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) snapped No. 1 Mater Dei's (Santa Ana, Calif.) 29-game winning streak with a 24-22 win. It was the first loss for the Monarchs in 1,091 days.
Senior quarterback
Pierce Clarkson threw for 250 yards and three touchdowns and showed his toughness returning to the game after suffering an injury in the second quarter. Two of his three touchdown passes came in the third quarter as the Braves took a commanding 24-13 lead heading into the fourth.
The Monarchs reeled off nine unanswered points to cut the deficit to 24-22 after a 1-yard touchdown run from sophomore running back
Jordon Davison with 3:08 left. St. John Bosco stuffed the 2-point attempt to hold on to the lead. The Braves had a key 3rd and 6 at the Monarchs 38 and Clarkson connected with
Matayo Uiagalelei for a first down that iced the game.
St. John Bosco advances to the CIF Open Division state championship on Dec. 10 at Saddleback College and will most likely face
Serra (San Mateo). The Padres improved to 13-0 with a 41-14 win over Archbishop Mitty (San Jose) in the CIF Central Coast Section Division 1 championship. They also have wins over Folsom and De La Salle (Concord) this season.
It was the first loss for Mater Dei's junior quarterback
Elijah Brown and he is now 29-1.
All six MaxPreps Top 25 teams from Texas advanced to the state quarterfinals.
No. 8 North Shore (Houston) cruised to a 49-21 win over Cinco Ranco (Katy) after trailing early 14-7. It was the Mustangs 26th consecutive win and the defending 6A Division 1 state champs will face Atascocita (Humble) with a spot in the 6A D1 semifinals on the line next week. The Mustangs erased a 13-3 second half deficit during the regular season meeting on Oct. 27 and won 16-13.
No. 9 Westlake (Austin) has the longest active winning streak in high school football and extended it to 53 after a 44-7 blowout win vs. San Benito. The Chaparrals will face Brennan (San Antonio) in the 6A Division 1 quarterfinals next week.
No. 11 Duncanville beat The Woodlands 35-3 and will face Westfield (Houston) in the 6A Division 1 quarterfinals next week. The Mustangs only loss this season came against North Shore (Houston) in September.
No. 12 Guyer (Denton) used its high-powered offense to beat Byron Nelson (Trophy Club) 59-41. Five-star Oklahoma commit
Jackson Arnold accounted for 316 yards of total offense and three scores. Junior running back
Trey Joyner had a big night rushing for 134 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries. Up next for the Wildcats is No. 23 Southlake Carroll (Southlake).
The Dragons beat McKinney 42-35. Senior running back

finished with 34 carries for 221 yards and four touchdowns including
the game-winning score from 13 yards out with just under a minute
remaining.
No. 17 Katy improved its record to 13-0 with a dominant 35-7 win over Summer Creek (Houston). Senior running back
Seth Davis had another big game rushing for 224 yards and two scores. Up next for the Tigers is C.E. King (Houston) in the 6A Division 2 quarterfinals.
No. 20 St. Edward (Lakewood) advanced to the Ohio Division 1 state championship game for the second consecutive season after rolling to a 31-7 win over Lincoln (Gahanna). They will face
Springfield on Dec. 2 after the Wildcats took down No. 24 Archbishop Moeller (Cincinnati) 28-24 in the other semifinal. Senior quarterback
Bryce Schondelmyer continued his huge season throwing for four touchdowns including the game-winning score to
Anthony Brown with just over four minutes left. These two faced off in the Division 1 championship last year and St. Edward won 23-13.
Florida had some marquee quarterfinal matchups but they all turned into one-sided games.
No. 5 Chaminade-Madonna (Hollywood) improved to 11-0 handing Cardinal Newman (West Palm Beach) its first loss of the season with a 49-16 win to advance to the 1M semifinals.
No. 7 St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale) took down Blanche Ely (Pompano
Beach) 35-7 to advance to the 3M semifinals.
No. 10 American Heritage (Plantation) beat Cardinal Gibbons (Fort Lauderdale) for the second time this season with a 31-20 win to advance to the 2M semifinals.
