The second round of the California Interscholastic Federation Regional
boys and girls basketball tournament opens Thursday throughout the
state. All girls games and non-doubleheader games involving boys start
at 6 p.m. Doubleheader boys' games begin at 8 p.m.
As
expected, the Southern Section has by far the most teams left with 24, followed by Sac-Joaquin (14), Central and Central Coast (11 each), North Coast (10), San Diego (nine), Los Angeles (5), Northern (3) and Oakland (1). Regional Open quarterfinal play
was completed Wednesday with the semifinals on Saturday.
The CIF announced the
pairings of its Northern and Southern California regional championships on Sunday. The winners in each of six
divisions meet to crown state champions March 11-12 at Golden 1 Center
in Sacramento. The pandemic wiped out the 2020 state finals and the 2021 regional and state tournament.
The 2019 girls champions were
Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth) in the Open Division,
Rosary Academy (Fullerton) in Division I,
Menlo School (Atherton) in Division II,
Oakland in Division III,
Oakland Tech (Oakland) in Division IV and
Caruthers in Division V.
