James was instrumental in ending Troy's 219-game league win streak.
The
Sonora (La Habra, Calif.) girls basketball team ended a streak Tuesday night that began before any of them were born.
The Raiders beat
Troy (Fullerton) 39-30 at home to snap the Warriors' 219-game league winning streak — the longest streak in state history.
Bill Clinton was president, Snoop was still known as Snoop Doggy Dogg and the internet was just starting to catch on when Troy last lost a Freeway League game — Jan. 18, 1996 as La Habra beat the Warriors 51-47.
Senior
Lainie James drained a 3-pointer with 1:25 left to give the Raiders a 35-30 lead and Sonora held on down the stretch for the victory.
"It was nice to have that kid on your side today," Sonora coach Melissa Barajas
told the Orange County Register. "Normally, that's the way it goes (for Troy). We compete, we compete and one of their studs just makes a play."
James finished with 11 points, while
Elizabeth Yoshitake added 10 points, including a perfect 8-of-8 from the free-throw line.
Troy, which has won 25 straight league titles, hosts Sonora on Feb. 8 — no doubt with the league crown at stake.
