St. Benedict's Prep (Newark, N.J.), Cheserek sliced 12 seconds off a 34-year-old record.
Meanwhile, another brilliant runner, senior Futsum Zeinasellassie of
North Central (Indianapolis), captured the Foot Locker Midwest Regional in 14:58 at Kenosha, Wis. He could be the biggest threat to Cheserek for the national championship on Dec. 10 in San Diego.

Saugus (Calif.) girls cross country team won its sixth consecutive Division II state title and sophomore Sarah Baxter of
Simi Valley (Calif.) repeated as individual Division II state champion with a time of 17:08.
POTPOURRI* Matt NeSmith, a senior from
North Augusta (S.C.), defeated Parker Derby of Columbus, Ga., 4 and 3, to win the Polo Golf Junior Classic in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. The University of South Carolina signee posted a 5-0 record, which included victories over four Rolex Junior All-Americans.
John Jay (Cross River, N.Y.) sophomore Nicole Morales won the girls title with a 3 and 1 victory over Jessica Vasilic of Anaheim Hills, Calif.
