National Highlight Reel: Maty Mauk sets national completions record

Not even a monsoon-like rainstorm could stop Maty Mauk from becoming the most prolific passer in the history of high school football.

The 6-foot-2, 195-pound senior quarterback completed 36 of 55 passes for 384 yards and three touchdowns on Friday while leading unbeaten Kenton (Ohio) to a narrow 30-28 victory over Elida.

That gave him 1,136 career completions, surpassing the national record of 1,103 established by J.R. House of Nitro (W. Va.) from 1995-98.

The University of Missouri recruit also moved ahead of Chris Leak to No. 2 all-time in passing attempts (1,790) and total yards (15,768). He remains third in touchdown passes with 175, just three behind second-place Ben Mauk, his older brother.

Ben Mauk currently is Maty's quarterback coach at Kenton under their father, head coach Mike Mauk.

Mike Mauk is pleased with both of his sons, who could be among the national passing leaders for years to come.

"It's really neat to see the two working together," he told MaxPreps. "We scored two touchdowns on fourth-down plays. It's a neat thing to listen to them. I kind of oversee (Ben and the other assistants)."

* Jacob Tucker passed for 82 yards and ran for 29 as Perry County (Linden, Tenn.) routed Richland (Lynnville, Tenn.), 47-8. Those modest totals enabled Tucker to set a state record with a career total offense of 10,513 yards. The previous record was 10,497.

* Washington (Tulsa, Okla.) junior Tom Carwile kicked a 58-yard field goal during a 47-10 victory over Memorial (Tulsa, Okla.). He also was perfect on six PAT kicks, seven of his eight kickoffs were touchbacks and his 47-yard punt was downed at the 1-yard line.

* On Sept. 23, Skyline (Ann Arbor, Mich.) senior quarterback Andrew Copp (6-1, 195) completed 31 of 49 passes for a state-record 557 yards during a 52-49 loss to Pioneer (Ann Arbor, Mich.). Seven of his completions went for touchdowns. Drake Johnson led Pioneer with 30 carries for 394 yards and six touchdowns.

* Two new national awards will be made this year for high school kickers, according to Eric Sondheimer of the Los Angeles Times. The top placekicker will receive the Chris Sailer Award – named in honor of the former All-American who is one of the premier kicking coaches in the nation. The other is the Chris Rubio Award, which will go to the No. 1 long snapper.

* Coaches Mike Holmes of Muskegon Catholic Central (Mich.) and Dave Keel of Homestead (Mequon, Wis.) both posted their 200th career victories last week.

* Ansonia (Conn.) sophomore Arkeel Newsome ran 22 times for 401 yards and five touchdowns during a 55-19 rout of Derby (Conn.). The game started on Friday, but had to be completed Saturday due to rain and lightning.

* New Balance has offered $500,000 over the next 10 years to help fund a renovation of the 75-year-old football stadium in Gloucester, Mass. The field would be named "New Balance Track and Field at Newell Stadium."

* Rider (Wichita Falls, Texas) overcame the 421 passing yards by Dalyn Williams to nip Lake Dallas (Corinth, Texas), 38-35.

* Trinity Christian (Addison, Texas) quarterback Daniel Davidson completed 25 of 39 passes for 515 yards and five touchdowns during a 63-59 loss to Prestonwood Christian Academy (Plano, Texas).

* Flower Mound (Texas) senior Marshall Williams passed for 438 yards and five touchdowns during a 38-37 overtime loss to Marcus (Flower Mound, Texas) before an overflow crowd of 11,000.

* A crowd of 15,253 was present to watch Pueblo Centennial (Colo.) roll past Pueblo Central (Colo.), 51-22, in their 111th meeting.

* Reynolds (Troutdale, Ore.) sophomore Josh Schleining completed 35 of 53 passes for 464 yards and six touchdowns during a 63-40 loss to Gresham (Ore.).

* Westlake (Westlake Village, Calif.) set a school record with a 73-27 rout of Royal (Simi Valley, Calif.). Connor Cook tied the school record with five touchdowns, including kickoff returns of 85 and 80 yards.

* Junior Brett Scanlon, aided by a strong wind at his back, kicked a school-record 55-yard field goal as Dowagiac (Mich.) blanked Plainwell (Mich.), 13-0.

* Sacred Heart (Mount Pleasant, Mich.) defeated Coleman (Mich.), 64-24, despite the passing of Trevor Jones, who completed 25 of 54 for 405 yards and three touchdowns. Tylor Rhynard caught 11 passes for 240 yards and also set the pace with 13 tackles.

EDWARD CHESEREK SETS CROSS COUNTRY RECORD
St. Benedict's Prep (Newark, N.J.) junior superstar Edward Cheserek won the New Jersey Puma Shore Coaches Invitational at Holmdel (N.J.) in a course-record time of 14 minutes, 53 seconds. Christian Brothers Academy (Lincroft, N.J.) placed the next five runners for a perfect score of 15 to win the boys team title.

* Holy Trinity Episcopal (Melbourne, Fla.) senior Daniel Moore won the Great American Cross Country Festival in Cary, N.C., with a course-record clocking of 14:57.6.

POTPOURRI
* Dwyer (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) senior Joell James (6-10, 285) has made a commitment to the University of North Carolina basketball program, according to the Palm Beach Post. He has added 20 pounds and four inches during the past two years and is expected to be a force this year.

* Nazareth (Brooklyn, N.Y.) continues to build a national girls basketball powerhouse with the transfer of highly regarded 5-11 senior Brianna Butler from William Penn Charter (Philadelphia, Pa.).

* UCLA is recruiting a strong pitching staff for next year, according to the Los Angeles Times. The latest to make a commitment is James Kaprielian, who compiled an 11-1 record as a junior at Beckman (Irvine, Calif.).
