Originally scheduled for Saturday, the 8-9 matchup in the Class 6A bracket moved to Friday at Quincy’s request to accommodate its roughly 300-mile trip
according to IHSA.org. The teams kicked off at 3 p.m. at Goode’s field, which does not have lights.
Goode’s rushing attack and Quincy’s passing game produced a nearly two-hour first half, with Goode taking a 60-59 lead into the break.
Quincy pulled ahead 74-72 entering the fourth quarter. But with the Blue Devils leading 88-84 and 3:42 remaining, darkness forced officials to suspend play around 5:50 p.m.
After conferring with game officials, the teams relocated about five miles to
Englewood STEM (Chicago), where play resumed at 6:53 p.m. local time following extra warm-ups.
Junior quarterback
Bryson Little threw a state playoff record eight touchdown passes and rushed for two more scores as the Blue Devils survived the postseason thriller.
The 172 combined points surpassed the state record established when
Springfield defeated
Rock Island 94-72 in 2021.
Quincy recovered an onside kick before Little connected with
Cole Burgess for a first down, allowing the Blue Devils to run out the clock.
