One of the most impressive streaks in the nation came to an end last week in Indiana 2A sectional play when Wapahani knocked off 14-time defending state champion Muncie Burris to end the Owls' season.
A winner of 22 state championships over the past 30 years, Muncie Burris had not lost a state tournament match since 1995. The 22 state titles is a national record, according to the National Federation of High Schools Record Book, and the 14 straight titles is second all-time.
However the Owls met the No. 2 ranked team in the state in the very first match of sectional play. Fresh off an equally stunning loss to No. 1 ranked 3A foe Yorktown the previous week, Muncie Burris fell to Wapahani in four games, 25-18, 25-21, 20-25, 25-16.
The loss ends the season for Muncie Burris (31-3) and drops the Owls out of the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 National Volleyball Rankings, presented by the Army National Guard.
Fayetteville (Ark.) replaces Muncie Burris in the Xcellent 25 after finishing the regular season ranked No. 1 in Arkansas with a 32-1 record. The Bulldogs have a win over Oklahoma 6A state champion Bishop Kelley (Tulsa), which also entered this week's rankings at No. 25.
