MaxPreps Top 25 high school football scores: No. 24 DeMatha falls to Roman Catholic 14-7

No. 6 Sierra Canyon blanks Saint Louis with 52-0 victory to improve to 3-0.

The biggest game on Thursday took place in the Peach State as the defending MaxPreps National Champs and No. 5 Buford (Ga.) took down No. 21 Central (Miami, Fla.) 18-7. It was the Wolves 18th consecutive victory and they have outscored their first three opponents, 98-33.

Three-star defensive back Silas Nuckles got Buford on the board first with a 29-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. James Perrone tied the game in the second quarter with a four-yard scamper. 

Buford controlled the game in the second half outscoring the Rockets 11-0. DJ Hunter connected with Owen Muraski for a six-yard touchdown and Evan Griffeth made a 35-yard field goal for all the scoring in the final 24 minutes. Up next for the Wolves is Grayson (Loganville, Ga.) on Sept. 18. 

Another big matchup on Thursday featured defending state champs in the Sunshine State. No. 19 West Boca Raton (Boca Raton, Fla.) improved to 3-0 with a 24-7 win over Cardinal Newman (West Palm Beach, Fla.). The back-to-back Class 6A state champs have won 10 games in a row since a 26-20 overtime loss to Cardinal Newman last season. 

No. 1 St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), No. 6 Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.) and No. 7 Columbus (Miami, Fla.) all cruised to easy wins on Thursday. 

The Raiders rolled to a 49-0 win over Dillard (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) to improve to 4-0. The Trailblazers continued their dominant start with a 52-0 victory against Saint Louis (Honolulu, Hawaii). They have outscored their first three opponents 118-28. The Explorers bounced back in a big way and handed Palmetto (Miami, Fla.) its first loss of the season with a 34-7 win. 

No. 11 Baylor (Chattanooga, Tenn.) topped No. 23 Trinity (Louisville, Ky.) 35-27 on Friday as the Red Raiders erased a halftime deficit. 

For Baylor, five-star Tennessee commit David Gabriel Georges piled up 310 rushing yards and five touchdowns in the win. Four of those scores were in the second half, including a 75-yard touchdown. 

In Georgia, No. 25 Lee County (Leesburg) defeated Colquitt County (Norman Park) 48-30. The game was knotted up 21-21 at the half before the Trojans put up 27 second half-points. Quay Sheard rushed for three touchdowns while Jaden Upshaw had two. Quarterback Cohen Lawson threw for one touchdown in the win as Lee County remains undefeated.

No. 10 Allen won against Southlake Carroll (Southlake) 56-35 on the road. Star sophomore Ty Snell threw three touchdowns, two of which went to Zach Williams as the Eagles erased a two-touchdown lead. On the ground Jrue Simmons rushed for a pair of touchdowns to help give Allen the lead, including an 83-yard rush. 

Defensively Allen also blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown and the Eagles move to 3-0.

Roman Catholic (Philadelphia, Pa.) upset No. 24 DeMatha (Hyattsville, Md.) 14-7. Quarterback Jahmil Hawkins ran for a score and threw another one to Kaylin Bass. The Cahillite used excellent defense from Andrew Woods and Chase Hinton in the secondary, while Walter Hudson and Coron Russell shutdown the DeMatha rushing attack. 

No. 14 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) overcame a 9-0 deficit in the MaxPreps Game of the Week and defeated  No. 13 Centennial (Corona, Calif.) 10-9. The Monarchs remain undefeated after pitching a second half shutout.

Mater Dei quarterback Russell Sekona scored the Monarchs lone touchdown when he rushed it in with 6:58 left in the game. That score was setup by an interception from Michael Davis.

Mater Dei started the season with wins over American Fork (Utah), Orem (Utah) and Valor Christian (Highlands Ranch, Colo.). Centennial (1-1) faces its third consecutive Trinity League opponent after opening with a 41-21 win over Servite (Anaheim) followed by a 21-20 loss to No. 4 Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita).
