The Midland Timberwolves will venture away from home to square off against the Annawan-Wethersfield Titans at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Midland is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.6 runs per game this season.
Midland took a loss when they played away from home on Tuesday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Thursday. They won by a run and slipped past Princeville 7-6. Meanwhile, after only one run in their last game, Annawan-Wethersfield made sure to put some runs up on the board against Mercer County on Thursday. The Titans walked away with a 10-5 victory over the Golden Eagles.
Maddux Heitzler was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching three innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit. He has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances. He was even better at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two triples, four RBI, and two runs. He is becoming a predictor of Annawan-Wethersfield's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 8-2 (and 9-10 when he doesn't).
In other pitching news, Isaiah Cornish looked comfortable as he pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one hit in three consecutive appearances.
Back at the plate, Annawan-Wethersfield let Cole Goodley and Dane Ross run wild. Goodley went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI, while Ross went 2-for-4 with three RBI, one run, and one double. Those two runs gave Goodley a new career-high. Nathan Harker was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and two runs.
Annawan-Wethersfield was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .400. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Mercer County only posted a batting average of .167.
The win got Midland back to even at 13-13. As for Annawan-Wethersfield, their record now sits at 17-12.
Midland suffered a grim 11-1 defeat to Annawan-Wethersfield when the teams last played back in May of 2018. Can the Timberwolves avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
