Ranked nationally in four different sports and winners of three state championships,
New Trier (Winnetka, Ill.) finished the 2023-24 fall sports season as the No. 1 team in the MaxPreps Cup standings.
New Trier came in ahead of last year's overall champion
Wayzata (Plymouth, Minn.) and
Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) with 1,413 points. The Illinois school won state titles in boys golf, boys soccer and girls tennis and also finished second in girls swimming. The Trevians were also ranked No. 3 in the nation in boys soccer by MaxPreps, No. 4 in girls swimming by Swimcloud, No. 24 in boys golf by HighSchoolGolf.org and No. 25 in girls field hockey by MaxPreps.
New Trier is the first Illinois school to be ranked No. 1 following the fall season.
Hinsdale Central (Hinsdale) was ranked No. 2 after the fall season in 2022-23.
The MaxPreps Cup is a ranking system that recognizes the top athletic programs in the nation. The rankings are based on an algorithm that awards points for state championships, state runner-up finishes and placement in national rankings. The ratings are weighted based on size of state, popularity of sport, the enrollment division of the sport and the number of teams competing in the enrollment division.
The MaxPreps Cup also uses the MaxPreps Top 25 expert rankings for volleyball and football and the MaxPreps computer rankings for boys soccer, girls soccer and girls field hockey. The formula also used boys and girls cross country team rankings by DyeStat, boys and girls swimming rankings by Swimcloud and boys and girls golf rankings by HighSchoolGolf.org.
